History Behind the Woodlawn Haunted Woods

In October year 2003, the owners Brian & Shari’ Copple, had a patch of woods they were not using. They were asked by the local community to do a fun haunt for a fundraiser for the new local park. Brian, who loves Halloween, loved the idea of having a haunt in their back yard. His wife, Shari’ agreed too after all they didn’t have any plans for the woods. The haunt started off as a one trail that went around in a small circle. 3-5 scenes and many volunteers, $3 a ticket to enter. The haunt had the regular monsters, vampires, werewolves, witches and few others. They had a really good turn out at the end of the month. After the year had ended, Brian and Shari’ talked amongst themselves and decided to do it again the next year. Brian, who was very thrilled, decided to build a few buildings in the woods to make it a bit scarier. Shari’ got the word out for more volunteers and for more people to come out. And before they knew it The Woodlawn Haunted Woods was born.

A few years started to go by as the owners continued to build their Halloween haunt and before they know it their kids started to participate in the building. Their son, Jonathan, helped Brian in building the buildings and making new trails. Their daughter, Rebecca, helped Shari’ in getting the word out, helping with costumes, finding volunteers and many other things. When it came to opening the haunt the only kid, in which the other one was scared to work, Jonathan participated in the scares. After a few more years went by Rebecca started to jump into action.

The family of four grew their haunt. As time went by Brian’s health was starting to fall. For those out there, Brian has MS, Multiple sclerosis, he was starting to have trouble walking. He was having a hard time keeping up but he didn’t want to stop because he loves Halloween and the haunt. His son, Jonathan decided to take over the building. The two worked together on the buildings, Brian gave the ideas and Jonathan built them. Shari’ and Rebecca participated in the building when they had the chance. Brian taught Jonathan everything he knew on how to build each of building, make trails, even fix and build the bridges.
Shari’ taught her daughter, Rebecca, everything that was require to run the haunt. How to attract customers, prices on costumes  and how to look for volunteers. So many trails and building were built to the point the haunt was a different route each year. Nothing ever stayed the same, it was different theme every year which made the haunt unique.  Then the time came, it had become hard to find volunteers to work the haunt every year. Shari’ gave the idea to her crew to start paying works, after much thought they all agreed. Things started to change both old and new, soon the haunt became a working business.

Applications were created to work the haunt, children between the ages 13 & 18 were required parents permission slips to work. New systems were being made to get things running.

After a few years Brian and Shari’ started to slowly let their kids over until the time came for them to step down. After 20 years since the first haunt, Woodlawn Haunted Woods has grown a lot. It is completely handicap, and for those that are scared to walk through. They are more than welcome to sit around the fire, which is lite every weekend, to enjoy the scaring fun. We are old fashion, no automatic props, no touch and always have fun haunted facility.

After so many years of our haunting fun, we thank you all for your likes, shares and support to help build our business to the way Brian dreams of it to be. He may be in a wheelchair but he is still kicking out there in participating in the haunt of his dreams. For those who are new and returning, we hope to see you all each year. Have a happy haunting and a thrilling Halloween everyone!
